Meanwhile, the scent of slow-cooked dishes will fill the air, enticing you to explore the park while waiting for the judging to begin.

Gravel Grinder Challenge: Lincoln County’s Ultimate Ride

March 31, 2025 by editor

nevada gravel grinder

Calling all gravel cycling enthusiasts! The Beaver Dam Gravel Grinder is Nevada’s premier gravel grinder event, offering cyclists a unique opportunity to traverse the diverse terrains of Beaver Dam State Park. Scheduled for June 21, 2025, this event promises an exhilarating ride through some of Nevada’s most scenic landscapes.

What is a Gravel Grinder?

Gravel grinders are cycling events that combine various surfaces—including asphalt, gravel, dirt, and even single-track trails—into a single race or ride. According to Mark Orton, a USA Cycling certified Level 1 coach, these events can feature courses ranging from hard-packed dirt to routes strewn with softball-sized rocks, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience for participants.

Event Details

  • Date: June 21, 2025
  • Location: Beaver Dam State Park, approximately three hours north of Las Vegas, near the Nevada-Utah border, in beautiful Lincoln County.
  • Registration: Open as of January 22, 2025. Interested riders can register through the event’s official website here.

Why Participate in the Beaver Dam Gravel Grinder?

Participating in the Beaver Dam Gravel Grinder offers more than just a challenging ride. Cyclists will experience the rugged beauty of Nevada’s canyon country, with routes that test endurance and skill across varied terrains. Additionally, the event fosters a sense of community among cycling enthusiasts, providing an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals.

Planning Your Beaver Dam State Park Trip

For those traveling from Las Vegas, the journey involves heading north on I-15, transitioning to US-93, and then following signs to Beaver Dam Road East. Detailed directions are available on the event’s website.

Given the park’s remote location, participants are encouraged to plan accommodations in advance. Beaver Dam State Park offers camping facilities, allowing riders to immerse themselves fully in the natural surroundings. It’s advisable to check the park’s reservation system and secure a spot ahead of time. There are also wonderful lodging options in the charming towns of Caliente, Panaca, Pioche, and Alamo. We recommend looking into reservations as soon as possible because the summer months tend to book up a fast. Camping at Beaver Dam State Park would be extremely convenient for the event, but if you’d like other options, Kershaw-Ryan and Cathedral Gorge State Parks would also be easily accessible.

The Vision of Kevin Boyle: Capturing the Spirit of Lincoln County

March 19, 2025 by editor

kevin boyle lincoln county nevada
Photography has the power to freeze time, preserve memories, and highlight the beauty of places that might otherwise be forgotten. When renowned Canadian photographer Kevin Boyle made his way from British Columbia to Lincoln County, Nevada, his goal was simple: to document two historic landmarks—Pioche’s Gem Theater and Carl’s Burgers in Caliente. But what he left behind is more than just images; it’s a stunning tribute to the heart and soul of our communities. kevin boyle photography

A Passion for Nostalgia and Storytelling

Kevin Boyle’s work is deeply personal. For over a decade, he has traveled across small towns in Canada, photographing historic structures that remind him of his childhood. His ā€œarchitectural portraitureā€ style captures more than just a building—it tells a story, evokes emotions, and connects viewers to the past. When Kevin discovered the Gem Theater through digital exploration, he was immediately drawn to its unique charm. He knew it was a place that deserved to be documented. Soon after, Carl’s Burgers in Caliente caught his eye, and he wasted no time booking a flight to Lincoln County.

Keving Boyle: Finding Beauty in the Desert

Although Kevin had photographed other desert landscapes before, something about Lincoln County stood out. The dramatic desert light, the rich colors of historic buildings, and the welcoming spirit of the community reminded him of home. From the moment he arrived, he was met with warmth—locals stopping to chat, offering insights, and sharing their own memories of these landmarks.

The Challenges and Triumphs of the Perfect Shot

Capturing the Gem Theater was no small feat. The street’s natural slope, nearby lighting, and architectural details made it one of the most complex shoots Kevin had ever done. In the end, he meticulously combined ten different photographs to create the final masterpiece—one that allows viewers to see the building in a way the human eye naturally wouldn’t. Even more impressively, the QR code on the movie poster in his final image actually works! This means that when people in Canada or across the U.S. see his work, they can scan the code and instantly learn more about Pioche and its history.

Why Historic Photography Matters to Kevin Boyle

Kevin Boyle’s work isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about preservation. Through his lens, these buildings become more than just relics of the past; they become reminders of vibrant communities, stories of resilience, and places of shared history. His hope is that when someone sees his image of the Gem Theater, they’ll remember the first movie they watched there, the popcorn they shared, or the excitement they felt as the lights dimmed.

A Lasting Impression

Kevin Boyle’s visit to Lincoln County is a testament to the power of art in keeping history alive. Though his time here was brief, his images will endure—allowing future generations to appreciate and remember these beloved landmarks. Thank you so much for coming to our community and sharing your gift with us Kevin. To explore more of Kevin’s work, visitĀ kevinboylestudio.com

The 2025 Planetary Alignment in Lincoln County, Nevada

February 24, 2025 by editor

How to Watch the February 28, 2025 Planetary Alignment in Lincoln County, Nevada

On February 28, 2025, the night sky above Lincoln County, Nevada, will light up with a rare celestial event: a planetary alignment featuring seven planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—stretching across the horizon. Known as a ā€œplanetary parade,ā€ this stunning display will be visible just after sunset, and Lincoln County’s vast, dark skies make it an unbeatable spot to witness it. Here’s your guide to enjoying this cosmic show in Nevada’s high desert.

Why Lincoln County is Perfect for the 2025 Planetary Alignment

Spanning over 10,000 square miles of rugged terrain, Lincoln County offers some of the clearest, least light-polluted skies in the West. Far from the glow of big cities, places like Cathedral Gorge State Park, the hills around Pioche, or the wide-open spaces near Caliente provide front-row seats to this astronomical wonder. With the New Moon coinciding on February 28, the sky will be extra dark, giving fainter planets like Uranus and Neptune a chance to shine alongside brilliant Venus and Jupiter.

What You’ll See on February 28th

Just after sunset—around 6:00 PM PST—look west to catch the show. Venus will blaze as the brightest object, low in Pisces, with dimmer Mercury and Saturn nearby in Aquarius. Neptune, also in Pisces, will require binoculars or a small telescope. Higher up, Jupiter will dazzle in Taurus, while Mars glows red in Gemini. Uranus, between Taurus and Aries, rounds out the lineup, though it’s faint to the naked eye. The planets won’t be in a perfect line in space, but from Earth, they’ll form a striking arc along the ecliptic—the Sun’s path across the sky.

Top Viewing Spots for the 2025 planetary alignment in Lincoln County

  • Cathedral Gorge State Park: Dramatic rock formations frame the sky, and its remote location keeps light pollution at bay. Bring a blanket and set up near the picnic area for a comfortable view.
  • Beaver Dam State Park: Tucked in a remote, isolated canyon near the Utah border, this primitive oasis offers dark skies and a rugged vibe—perfect for stargazing far from civilization’s glow.
  • Pioche Overlook: High elevation and unobstructed horizons make this historic mining town a stargazer’s dream. Park along the outskirts for a panoramic sweep of the alignment.
  • Echo Canyon State Park: Nestled at the head of Dry Valley, this high-desert haven pairs a peaceful reservoir with some of Lincoln County’s darkest skies—ideal for soaking in the planetary parade. Set up near the water’s edge or hike up to a ridge for an unobstructed view of Venus, Jupiter, and friends lighting up the night, with the canyon’s stillness amplifying the cosmic vibe.
  • The Extraterrestrial Highway:Ā Buckle up for a close encounter—er, view—of the cosmos along this quirky stretch! Just a UFO’s throw from Area 51, its pitch-black isolation is prime for spotting planets (or little green visitors). Snap a selfie with the iconic sign and scan the skies.

Tips for an Unforgettable Night

  • Timing: Arrive before sunset (5:45 PM PST) to watch the planets emerge as twilight fades. The best window is 6:00–7:30 PM before Mercury and Saturn dip too low.
  • Gear: Binoculars or a telescope will reveal Neptune and Uranus, but Venus, Jupiter, and Mars are naked-eye stunners. A star map app like Sky Tonight can help you pinpoint each planet.
  • Prep: February nights in the high desert can dip below freezing, so bundle up with layers, a thermos of hot cocoa, and a camp chair. Check the weather—clear skies are forecast, but it’s always wise to confirm.
  • Capture It: Bring a camera or smartphone with a night mode setting to snap the alignment against Lincoln County’s rugged backdrop.

Make It a Weekend Adventure

Turn your stargazing into a full experience! Book a room at a cozy spot or camp under the stars at one of Lincoln County’s many dispersed sites. Earlier in the day, explore the county’s ghost towns or hike a trail to build anticipation. After the alignment, warm up with a meal at a local eatery, sharing stories of the cosmic display.

A Rare Event in a Rare Place

This seven-planet alignment won’t happen again for years, and Lincoln County’s wild, open landscapes make it a bucket-list destination to see it. Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or just love a good night under the stars, February 28, 2025, promises a memory worth chasing. Mark your calendar, pack your gear, and join us in Lincoln County for a front-row seat to the universe.

Recently restored to its original terracotta exterior, this space will serve as a vibrant community hub for both residents and visitors. A huge thank you to @danaleefruend for capturing its beauty so perfectly! We are lucky to have such incredible talent in our community. ā¤ļø Tap the link in our bio to learn more about this historic gem. #EscapeTheChaos #VisitLincolnCountyNV

šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øHappy Presidents’ Day from Lincoln Count šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øHappy Presidents’ Day from Lincoln County, Nevada! Here in Lincoln County, history isn’t just something you read about—it’s something you can see, touch, and walk through. Named after President Abraham Lincoln, our county holds the stories of the Old West, of pioneers and dreamers who carved out a life in this rugged land. Step inside the Lincoln County Museum, and you’ll find relics of a time long past—weathered saddles, tools worn smooth by hard-working hands, and echoes of a county that once bustled with miners, ranchers, and lawmen—and still does. Every artifact speaks of resilience, grit, and the unshakable spirit that built the West. The museum is open to the public Monday-Saturday. We’ve been told by reputable sources it’s one of the ā€œbest historical museumsā€ in the state of Nevada. ā¤ļø So today, as we tip our hats to the leaders of our nation, we also honor the history that made this place home. Happy Presidents’ Day! #visitlincolncountynv #escapethechaos
