Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

On Sept. 20-22 Caliente held its first annual Mountain Bike Festival. The event encompassed the Barnes Canyon and Kershaw-Ryan State Park single-track trail networks as well as the Caliente Super Park flow trails, dirt jumps and pump track.

Around 200 individuals attended the free event, considered the soft opening of the new trail network still under construction around Caliente. Around 30 miles of trails have been completed. That number will be up to 40 miles by next year. The event was a culmination of collaborative work done by local, state and federal organizations, along with a variety of volunteers.

Aug. 6-10, a homegrown display of riding and roping made its way to the Lincoln County Fair grounds situated right outside of Panaca for the county fair.

After the selection of rodeo royalty earlier in the week came the main rodeo itself on Aug. 9-10. On Aug. 9, before any of the riders took to their saddles, the rodeo recognized members of the community who had contributed to the rodeo in the past and who passed away in 2019. Kenny Lee was the first to be honored. His descendants were quoted as saying, “It just ain’t the same without grandpa.”

William L Cox was remembered as a lifelong helper of the 4H and its most staunch donator.

From the exciting rendition of “This is the Greatest Show” ringing through the speakers to the flashing lights racing through the room, the “Lincoln County’s Got Talent” show delivered a spectacle.

Held July 19, the event was put on by Natalie Wadsworth. A cash prize was offered to the top three performers, as determined by the audience. Between acts, prizes were awarded to select audience members which included free concessions, ticket reimbursement and even an Amazon gift card.

Pioneer Day in Panaca started off July 20 as it usually does: with a bang. Dynamite explosions were heard throughout the town, shaking windows and alerting everyone within the community that fun was soon to be had. Though, technically, the celebrations had already begun the day before, with the first day of the craft fair, the outdoor movie night showing of “Captain Marvel” and the “Lincoln County’s Got Talent” show.

Saturday was jam-packed with adventures for one and all, starting with the 5K run to Cathedral Gorge and the flag ceremony held by Boy Scout Troop 514. Then the Panaca First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints hosted a breakfast made up of eggs, hash browns, sausage patties and pancakes, attended by hundreds of hungry people.

Nevada Lieutenant Governor Kate Marshall paid a special visit to Pioche June 14.

Marshall has been visiting key tourist spots in Nevada. Pioche was the last place on her itinerary.

“As lieutenant governor, I am in charge of tourism, which is really rural tourism, so part of what I do is going out to see what’s available to attract tourists and bring tourists and try to bring awareness and highlight those areas,” Marshall said. “For example, this morning we’re going to the art and coffee place here in Pioche. We stayed at the Overland Hotel.”

If ever an off-road racer had reason to celebrate; it was competitors like charger James Ford, who captured the highly-competitive Class 10 category in the annual running of the Knotty Pine 250.

Presented on June 8 about 180 miles north of Las Vegas in what could be termed “The God’s Country of Motorsports,” Ford clicked off four consecutive laps for what was nothing less than a rendition of “Get Out of Vegas” weekend.
