Caliente offers trails to satisfy any type of rider

April 26, 2021 by Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

Popular mountain biking influencer Danica Fife recently took a trip to Caliente to test out new trails in the area. Check out her review below!

Less than 2.5 hours from Las Vegas is a stunning biking destination. In the small town of Caliente, Nev., there are multiple trails to satisfy any type of rider. From the progression jumps at the skills park to chunky rock gardens at Barnes Canyon, this area will bring a smile to any tech or flow rider.

Caliente Skills Park

Jumps, skinnies, a pump track, you name it! This mountain bike skills zone is an optimal place to hone in some essential bike handling skills.

My favorite area was the progression jumps. They were poppy and smooth. Also, the jumps were built in a way that made them extremely case-friendly. Trust me, I had my fair share of cases that day!

Barnes Canyon

These trails keep you on your toes. One trail can be full of flow, then the next consists of slow rock moves. After a riding-filled day, I can’t think of a better way to end the adventure than pitching up camp at the bottom of the majestic Tepee Rocks. The scenery here is definitely one of those special places where you have to stop mid-ride just to take it in.

Kershaw-Ryan State Park

This area has a mellow 5.3 mile loop with views for miles. It has a bonus short black diamond option as well, if you are feeling spicy.

This trail called Skidsteer was the favorite of the trip. Even though it only took a few minutes to ride down! It consisted of steep sandy corners and rock gardens that made you realize the trail’s name was extremely accurate.

Cathedral Gorge

You caught me, this isn’t biking. However, we have to strech our legs out every once in a while right? While Cathedral Gorge does have a biking option, I opted for exploring the slot canyons. This state park is 15 minutes out of Caliente and 10/10 would recommend this area. Just the views alone from the road were worth it.

Travel Nevada: Welcome to Alien Country

April 13, 2021 by Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

Visitors to Nevada make contact with a lot of odd things. Monster museums. A micronation in the middle of the state. Maybe even a haunted hotel or two. But all this extraterrestrial themed stuff… alien masks, jerky shops, music festivals… what gives? It all probably comes back to the fact that Nevada is the home of Area 51, the infamously (no longer all that) secret unit of the U.S. Government’s Nevada Test and Training Range that is rumored to house a fleet of extraterrestrial spacecraft and, as the internet jokingly (or otherwise) wondered in 2019, extraterrestrial life forms themselves.Ā Curious?Ā Pilot your vessel down Nevada State Route 375, otherwise known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. Whether you make extraterrestrial contact or not, you may still get into the lore or, better yet, have a close enough encounter with a story-telling local or two that you go home inspired to dig into some of the conspiracies yourself.

The Monroe News: Nevada state park offers otherworldly views

February 18, 2021 by Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

“[Cathedral] Gorge Canyon State Park in Nevada is known for its abundance of slot canyons. The walls are buff-colored and change to deeper colors as the sun moves, allowing for different scenic views throughout a day. The siltstone canyons and cathedral-like spires have resulted from events occurring tens of millions of years ago. This park has many hidden treasures, great walking trails that take visitors into the middle of the spires and caves to explore.

“Alongside its natural beauty, the gorge has a deep history of early pioneers from the late 1800s. During the 1920s, once people owned automobiles, they came to explore this unique area. It became a state park in 1935 and the Civilian Conservation Corps over time built stone fire pits, a shade ramada and picnicking facilities.”

KOLO: Silver State Sights – Caliente

February 18, 2021 by Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – For the 1100 people who live in the small Lincoln County town, life is a bit different.

ā€œIt’s a lot slower. You learn that you are going to travel to do any shopping,ā€ said long time resident Rick Phillips.

The town is best known for its railroad depot which is now headquarters for the city of Caliente. Once known for being the halfway point on trips from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles, the depot is now coming up on its 100th year.

Lincoln County’s public land offers near-endless possibilities

January 21, 2021 by Lincoln County Authority of Tourism (LCAT)

Adventure awaits in Lincoln County, where vast expanses of public land are open for exploration. Hundreds of miles of unspoiled wilderness offer low-cost, and socially distanced, outdoor activities.Ā

Check out Lincoln County’s vast network of dirt roads, designed for all-wheel drive and off-highway vehicle exploration. Trails crisscross diverse terrain, offering access to stunning views. The renowned Silver State Trail, a 260-mile loop of well-marked backcountry roads that will take you up and down Lincoln County’s famous mountain/basin landscape.

Get your heart pumping on Lincoln County’s rapidly expanding mountain biking trails. Just four miles from Caliente, Barnes Canyon boasts 13 miles of singletrack trails with a variety of terrains from flowy to technical, for riders of all skill levels. New riders or anyone seeking a desert view will enjoy the seven-mile Kershaw Redemption trail in Kershaw-Ryan State Park. Also opening in summer 2021 is the Ella Mountain Trail, a nine-mile descent that promises a flowy ride with exposed slickrock.

The Basin Range National Monument offers visitors 704,000 extremely remote acres of sweeping desert valley basin and mountain landscape to explore. The monument includes several valleys and mountain ranges for climbing, hiking, bicycling, camping, hunting and OHV riding. History buffs should be sure to catch Mt. Irish Archaeological District and the Shooting Gallery rock art site, where petroglyphs were carved by the locals 4,000 years ago.

Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge is an oasis in the Mojave desert that offers quietude and an impressive array of wildlife. A favorite destination for birdwatchers, the refuge is a pitstop for hundreds of species of birds as they migrate or overwinter each year. The refuge also offers lakeside camping, with 15 free campsites available on the shores of Upper Pahranagat Lake.

These sites are only just the beginning. The recreational opportunities in Lincoln County are almost endless.

šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øHappy Presidents’ Day from Lincoln Count šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øHappy Presidents’ Day from Lincoln County, Nevada! Here in Lincoln County, history isn’t just something you read about—it’s something you can see, touch, and walk through. Named after President Abraham Lincoln, our county holds the stories of the Old West, of pioneers and dreamers who carved out a life in this rugged land. Step inside the Lincoln County Museum, and you’ll find relics of a time long past—weathered saddles, tools worn smooth by hard-working hands, and echoes of a county that once bustled with miners, ranchers, and lawmen—and still does. Every artifact speaks of resilience, grit, and the unshakable spirit that built the West. The museum is open to the public Monday-Saturday. We’ve been told by reputable sources it’s one of the ā€œbest historical museumsā€ in the state of Nevada. ā¤ļø So today, as we tip our hats to the leaders of our nation, we also honor the history that made this place home.
